On Monday July 21st over 51 people over the age of 55 took to the water at the All Aboard water sports centre. The weather was perfect, it was warm, sunny and a light breeze blew across the water, perfect for all the activities; sailing, rowing, canoeing and kayaking.
Some of the attendees were very keen and ready to go, but other people were a little more cautious and it took a little courage to get on board and go out into the harbour.
“My family will never believe that I have done this, I can’t swim and I am pretty scared of the water but it was amazing, I loved it”.
“It’s so good that we can try these activities and get out onto the water, it’s so good that people are creating these opportunities for us. I will definitely be signing up for the weekly sessions.”
“I’ve had such fun today, the staff were so friendly and helpful, I thought that it would be a bit scary but it’s been brilliant.”
The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress attended the launch and were keen to have a go themselves taking to one of the large rowing boats. They also accepted the cheque for £89,000 on behalf of All Aboard from Sport England who are funding the project.
The All Aboard centre is a nationally respected centre that brings water sports to all and are working in partnership with LinkAge Bristol, Royal Yacht Association, British Canoe Union and British Rowing to help people over 55 to make the best of one of Bristol’s most beautiful resources, its harbour side.
Taster sessions will be held every Wednesday at All Aboard and we hope you will be able to come along and enjoy the water sports, learn new skills and meet new people. We have a fantastic programme for both the summer and the winter and it will be great to have you join us.
