Move into Autumn with the Macmillan Project

September has been a busy month for the Macmillan Prevention & Re-enablement project, with developments starting for the expansion of the project, a variety of events taking place across the city, and more people aged 55+ affected by cancer, being supported into activities.

Where’s the Macmillan project been this month?

From a rather wet and windy Goram Fair, to the Wellbeing Taster Days from LinkAge partners Bristol Charities (Greater Brislington Hub) and St Monica Trust (Stockwood Hub), as ever, it has been fantastic meeting new people who can access support from the project.

This month the project met faces old and new. At Goram Fair, Project Manager Sally Crocker bumped into Mr and Mrs Broe. The couple previously attended the project’s Summer Wellbeing Day back in June, whilst Mr Broe was overcoming the end of his cancer treatment. It was great to learn how the project had supported them into engaging into activity, with Mr Broe now taking part in the Energise! Cancer Rehab Programme, and Mrs Broe now attending Pilates classes in her local community. We wish them all the best in their journey to getting active.

The project was also at the Celebrating Age Festival on Saturday 23rd September. The event was a fantastic opportunity to engage with so many over 55’s across Bristol. Many people who came to the stall shared their experiences with cancer, and through conversation we were able to discuss what activities they might like to try, and how the Macmillan Taster Tokens can support them with this. There was a clear message of ‘life after cancer’ and it was great to learn people’s motivations to engage in physical activity as being a positive step towards their recovery.

Next month, the project will be at Brooklea Health Fair, Wednesday 11th October from 2pm – 6pm and the New Room Wellbeing Day, Saturday 14th October from 10.30am – 4pm, as part of Healthy City Week. So do come and say hello!
How can the Macmillan project support you?

If you have or have previously had a direct cancer diagnosis; are a carer for someone with cancer or are bereaved, please call our Macmillan team for a chat. The Macmillan project can support you in your journey to getting active.

We will send you a tailored information pack which will include an activity guide and a booklet advising you on physical activity and cancer treatment. The pack will also include a Taster Token, enabling you to x5 free activities*, and information on activities, opportunities and relevant services in your area. You will be asked to complete a short questionnaire, which with your permission we can use to monitor your health and wellbeing.

The project has regular Wellbeing Days that aim to showcase an array of activities and services from across the city. The days offer speakers; an opportunity to meet new people; and a supportive and positive space to focus on the next step in your journey.
